In January of 2001, I stepped off my flight at the Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok. The air was muggy and the temp was 98 degrees. Almost a 100 degree difference from when I took off that winter morning in Iowa.
My plan - Change Thailand and make it a Christian Nation! Oh yeah, and I figured I could accomplish that task in just a few short years! I had spent months planning and even longer dreaming about living on the mission field. I had made it! I was young, naive, and ready to go!
I jumped right into language studies and within 6 months was able to converse with taxi drivers and people at the market. I had learned which foods were my favorite and I was settling in nicely.
Now, over 20 years later and I can say that I’m not as naive as I once was, and I can confirm that I haven’t turned Thailand into a Christian nation. That doesn’t deter me from pushing forward to fulfill God’s plan on my life in this region of the world.
